FILONYN COLODAN: DND NPC

Although I now mostly write and draw the version of Filonyn from Monster of the Week, they were actually originally an NPC from my Dungeons and Dragons campaign. In this incarnation, they were much better adjusted, because instead of living on Earth and interacting with a lot of very unpleasant people and events for hundreds of years, DND Filonyn gets to live in a friendly small town where not much happens. This is a much healthier environment for them.

Filonyn is a dark eladrin refugee from the fall of the greatest eladrin city in the Feywild, Illeluna- a metropolis that was destroyed in an instant when it was torn in half and divided between the Feywild and Material Plane during a botched attempt at setting up a permanent portal by the local high mages. Back in Illeluna, they were a well renowned fashion designer, but now they're living in the small town of Greenvale and working as a dyemaker and fabric weaver. They grow all the plants they use for their dyes in their yard.

Generally, this is a pretty good setup for them, but they'd rather not their past become public knowledge due to the reputation fae have for being dangerous to deal with- they're trying to run a business here! For that reason, they allow everyone in Greenvale to assume that they are just a regular drow from the Underdark. Since no one in Greenvale has actually been to the Underdark, no one is really equipped to notice that Filonyn definitely hasn't been there either.

In my campaign's lore, the Feywild is full enough of magical energy that exposure to it tends to have strong side effects, and most fae are full of that magical energy all the time because they live there. They're able to draw on this for a significant amount of power, but it leaves them emotionally volatile and overly energetic. Filonyn has been away from the Feywild for so long it's mostly out of their system, but when a portal opened near Greenvale and they went over to investigate, they got a partial refill and it caused their eyes to glow, something which they didn't want their neighbors seeing. Because of this, they started wearing a blindfold and will continue doing so until the glowing stops.

Personality

Filonyn is quiet and reserved, and it's rare to see them emote more than a tiny bit at all- this is because they're well aware fae tend to be over the top, and they want to fit in with mortals, so they are overcompensating. Between this, the fact they're older than the town itself and many times older than any of the other residents, the fact they rarely leave their own property, and the fact that they're mostly nocturnal, they've got a reputation for being a mysterious recluse. Nonetheless, they aren't impolite or mean to anyone, so their neighbors like them enough despite not knowing much about them.

Filonyn takes great pride in their beautiful flower garden, and in the dyes they create from the plants. Thanks to them, locals can wear garments made of colorful cloth they would not otherwise be able to afford. They enjoy the relatively quiet and calm atmosphere of Greenvale compared to the Feywild.

History

Filonyn hails from Illeluna, the former largest city in the Feywild, now a smoldering ruin. They weren't involved in the failed high magic ritual that ripped the city in half and deposited half of it in the Material Plane, but it destroyed their home nonetheless. Prior to its destruction, Illeluna was half aboveground in the Feywild and half belowground in the Feydark, where Filonyn lived. They were a respected fashion designer there, but after the city was destroyed, they lost everything at set out to find a new home.

Filonyn has been living at their current home for longer than the town surrounding their house has existed. When they moved there, there was only one farm near where they set up their house. Now, it has grown into a small but vibrant community. Filonyn works as a weaver and dyemaker, supplying fine textiles to the town. They work in close collaboration with Vatho, a young human seamstress who is the only person in town who knows them well enough to be considered their friend.

When an unstable portal to the Feywild opened near Greenvale, allowing monsters to enter and wreak havoc on the town, Filonyn knew what was going on but didn't say anything since they had no way to explain how they knew about it that wouldn't make everyone extremely suspicious, and they didn't feel it would help, anyway. When an adventuring party arrived in town and defeated the ettercap that had been terrorizing the townsfolk, Filonyn showed them the portal and requested that they head to the ruins of Illeluna to close the giant portal that had destroyed it and that was causing these smaller portals to open around the world.
