MYANTHA WREN

Formerly a relatively benevolent fairy even by Seelie standards, Myantha switched courts after humans stopped acknowledging the fae, a development that made her furious. This was a long time coming, as she'd already begun withdrawing from human contact when the witch hunts began. Now, she interacts only with other fae when possible, and any human who crosses her path is in serious danger. Myantha has limited shapeshifting ability and can be either roughly human-sized or about 5 inches tall. She tends to be small when she wants to avoid people, and human-sized when hanging out with her friends or attacking people.

Myantha is Filonyn's former best friend. They are about the same age and have known each other for practically their entire lives, and they were quite close until the 1500s. Unfortunately, around that time, their conflicting ideas about how to interact with humans began eroding their relationship. Nowadays, they cannot stand each other, but continue to pretend to be friends in order to avoid the social fallout of cutting each other off.

Personality

Myantha is pretty abrasive even towards other fae, and as a result most other fae do not like her very much. She's also switched courts, which is frowned upon, and even other Unseelie fae do not necessarily trust that she is actually loyal. Of course, it would be extremely rude to actually say anything about it, though, and so everyone keeps quiet and continues inviting her to parties. She has a penchant for mean-spirited pranks and serving raw meat at parties regardless of whether anybody else wants it or not.

She is actively dangerous to humans, and will attack any human who bothers her, whether they did so intentionally or not. Occasionally, she'll even go out and attack people for fun. She could, in theory, be befriended by a human who convinced her that they respect her and will leave offerings regularly, but it would be quite difficult to convince her of this in time to avoid getting killed or maimed.

Desperate for a type of approval and attention that she's routinely been denied for the last several hundred years, Myantha neglects to acknowledge that her own behavior could possibly have anything to do with the problem. Instead, she lashes out at everyone who she feels like isn't treating her like she deserves, pushing them away further. She is aware that this makes others upset, but she's decided that trying to get attention for being nice is hopeless, so she might as well see if she can get attention by grabbing a shovel and digging the hole she's found herself in as deep as possible. Still, she's unwilling to completely sever herself from her social group, and so there are some lines she refuses to cross.

History

Myantha came into existence sometime around 800 AD, in the Carolingian Empire. The two of them knew each other while Filonyn was still living at the fae court, but after Filonyn left, they became closer and spent several hundred years of their lives as best friends, moving around Europe together. Although she was never particularly invested in humans on a personal level, Myantha enjoyed her limited interactions with humans during this time when they did occur - mainly doling out blessings in exchange for offerings.

Unfortunately, around the 1500s, fault lines began to appear in Myantha and Filonyn's friendship. Upon witnessing the witch trials, Myantha decided that humans were both too dangerous and not worth her time or energy. She asked Filonyn to come to the fae realm with her - she'd never been court fae, but they had been, and so they were her best shot at getting into court herself. Nonetheless, they rejected her request and went into hiding for a hundred years to wait for the witch trials to go away instead, barely communicating with Myantha and not communicating at all with anyone else. Myantha felt her best friend had betrayed her over something really stupid and was deeply hurt and angry. Filonyn felt Myantha was disrespecting them by demanding they return to the court and abandon their life on Earth despite knowing how important it was to them. Although the two of them tried to rekindle their friendship after Filonyn came out of hiding again, they never really forgave each other.

Myantha moved to Newhaven around 100 years ago, at the same time as Filonyn did. Shortly thereafter, increasingly frustrated and angry about both the end of human acknowledgement of the existence of fae and the Seelie-led Council's policy of secrecy, she decided to take advantage of the fact that she'd left behind most of her acquaintances on another continent already and switch courts when there would be the minimum level of scandal about it. Immediately after switching her allegiance to the Unseelie Court, she began acting out in violent ways against humans, since now she could get away with it. Even the other Unseelie fae were, for the most part, displeased by her behavior - it was reckless, unnecessary, clearly performative, and really obviously personal in a somewhat embarrassing way. Most other Unseelie fae in the area view her as something of a poser, and most of the Seelie fae she still interacts with barely tolerate her. In the 1980s, Myantha once killed a human Filonyn was acquainted with and brought his head to a tea party as a prank. Filonyn was incredibly upset by this and gave her the cold shoulder for 20 years over it, and all other fae present thought that Myantha's prank was gross and juvenile but also that Filonyn's reaction was excessive, so neither of them have heard the end of it to this day.

Myantha hosts frequent tea parties for her remaining Seelie acquaintances, which are generally deeply tense and awkward. At one of these events, an incident involving angels and Filonyn's hunting party occurred, resulting in a divine explosion that destroyed a massive chunk of the forest, including Myantha's house. Despite what a disaster this was, it's actually the closest to a reconciliation Myantha and Filonyn have come in hundreds of years from Myantha's perspective - after the two of them had been sniping at each other verbally for the whole tea party, Filonyn nonetheless elected to get up and go risk their own life to take down an obnoxious fellow who crashed the tea party and argued with Myantha. Not only does Myantha appreciate the thrill of violence, she also interpreted this as a sign they still cared about her at some level. Unfortunately for her, they actually just did that because they felt obligated to.
